A cup measures volume and a gram measures weight, so the conversion depends on how dense the ingredient is. This converter uses the USDA's weight for a level US cup of each ingredient and rounds to measures you can actually scoop.

How to convert grams to cups
Divide the weight in grams by the weight of one cup of that ingredient:
cups = grams ÷ grams per cupExample: a recipe calls for 250 g of all-purpose flour. One level cup of all-purpose flour weighs 125 g, so 250 ÷ 125 = 2 cups. The same 250 g of granulated sugar is 250 ÷ 200 = 1.25 cups, or 1 1/4 cups.
To turn a decimal into something you can measure, take the whole cups, then the nearest cup fraction (1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 2/3 or 3/4), then make up the rest with tablespoons. There are 16 tablespoons in a cup, so 0.06 cup is about 1 tablespoon.
Weight of 1 cup, by ingredient
These are the USDA's household-measure weights for a level US cup. Use them for any amount: grams ÷ the 1-cup weight = cups.
| Ingredient | 1 cup | 1/2 cup | 1/4 cup | 1 tbsp | How measured |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| All-purpose flour | 125 g | 63 g | 31 g | 7.8 g | spooned into the cup and leveled |
| Bread flour | 137 g | 69 g | 34 g | 8.6 g | spooned and leveled |
| Whole wheat flour | 120 g | 60 g | 30 g | 7.5 g | spooned and leveled |
| Granulated sugar | 200 g | 100 g | 50 g | 13 g | white sugar |
| Brown sugar (packed) | 220 g | 110 g | 55 g | 14 g | firmly packed |
| Powdered sugar | 120 g | 60 g | 30 g | 7.5 g | unsifted |
| Butter | 227 g | 114 g | 57 g | 14 g | 2 US sticks |
| Water | 237 g | 119 g | 59 g | 15 g | 1 mL of water weighs about 1 g |
| Whole milk | 244 g | 122 g | 61 g | 15 g | 3.25% milkfat |
| Heavy cream | 238 g | 119 g | 60 g | 15 g | liquid, not whipped |
| Vegetable oil | 218 g | 109 g | 55 g | 14 g | canola or similar |
| Honey | 339 g | 170 g | 85 g | 21 g | level cup |
| Cocoa powder | 86 g | 43 g | 22 g | 5.4 g | unsweetened |
| Rolled oats | 81 g | 41 g | 20 g | 5.1 g | old-fashioned, dry |
| White rice | 185 g | 93 g | 46 g | 12 g | long-grain, uncooked |
| Cornstarch | 128 g | 64 g | 32 g | 8 g | level cup |
| Table salt | 292 g | 146 g | 73 g | 18 g | fine; kosher salt is much lighter |
| Peanut butter | 258 g | 129 g | 65 g | 16 g | smooth |
| Chocolate chips | 168 g | 84 g | 42 g | 11 g | semisweet |
Kosher salt weighs much less than table salt per cup (its crystals are larger and hollow), and the brands differ, so don't swap them by volume.
Measuring cups accurately
- Flour and powdered sugar: stir to loosen, spoon into the cup, then level with a straight edge. Don't tap or shake the cup.
- Brown sugar: press it firmly into the cup until it holds its shape when turned out.
- Liquids: use a clear measuring jug on a flat surface and read it at eye level.
- Sticky ingredients (honey, peanut butter): a light film of oil in the cup helps them slide out, so you get the full amount.
If the recipe gives grams, a kitchen scale is quicker and more accurate than any cup conversion. Set the bowl on the scale, press tare, and add each ingredient by weight.
Frequently asked questions
How many cups is 100 grams?
It depends on the ingredient. 100 g of all-purpose flour is 0.8 cup, about 2/3 cup + 2 tbsp, 100 g of granulated sugar is 1/2 cup, and 100 g of butter is a little under 1/2 cup (7 tbsp).
How many grams are in 1 cup?
1 US cup of water weighs about 237 g. For dry ingredients it is less: about 125 g for all-purpose flour, 200 g for granulated sugar and 120 g for powdered sugar. Butter is 227 g per cup.
Why do other converters give different numbers for flour?
Flour packs down. A cup filled by spooning flour in and leveling it weighs 120–125 g; scooping straight from the bag can push it to 140 g or more. Recipes written by weight avoid the problem, which is why bakers prefer a scale.
Is a US cup the same as a metric cup?
No. A US customary cup is 236.6 mL. The metric cup used in Australia, New Zealand and Canada is 250 mL, about 6% larger, and US nutrition labels round a cup to 240 mL. This converter uses the 236.6 mL US cup.
Do I measure butter by the cup?
You can, but in the US butter is usually sold in 1/2-cup sticks of 113 g (8 tablespoons), so 1 cup of butter is 2 sticks or 227 g.
