Gauge and Size Charts
"Gauge" means something different in every trade. A 16 gauge wire, a 16 gauge steel sheet and a 16 gauge needle are three different sizes. Each chart here covers one system, gives the thickness or diameter in both inches and millimeters, and cites the standard it comes from.

Gauge systems at a glance
- American Wire Gauge (AWG): electrical wire diameter. 4/0 is the largest, 40 one of the finest.
- Manufacturers' Standard Gauge: sheet steel thickness, derived from weight per square foot.
- Aluminum sheet: follows the AWG series, so it's thinner than steel at the same gauge.
