About Weights & Measures
Weights & Measures is a reference for measurement: the charts, standards and conversions people look up while cooking, building, wiring, sewing, sailing or reading old documents. Each page aims to answer the question in its first sentence, then give the full table, a converter, and the source.
History of the site
From 2002 to 2014, weights-and-measures.com hosted Commerce Standards (Common Weights and Measures), a plain reference of about 125 pages covering wire and sheet gauges, shoe sizes, troy and apothecaries' weight, surveyors' measures, wind scales and much more. Teachers, machinists, coin collectors and Wikipedia editors linked to it for years. The site went offline in 2015, and the domain was later used by unrelated sites.
The current site is a new project by new owners. We registered the domain in 2026 because the original was a useful reference that deserved to come back. We aren't the original authors, and we haven't copied their pages. We've rebuilt the topics people still look for, with modern sources, and set up redirects so the old links people still follow reach the matching new page.
How the site is run
- Sources first. Every chart lists the standard or dataset it comes from. See sources and methodology.
- One source of truth. Each converter and its printed table are generated from the same data file, and every converter is tested against its table before an update goes live.
- Corrections. If you find an error, please tell us. Fixes are logged on the methodology page.
- Independence. The site may carry ads in future. Advertisers have no say over content, and we don't accept paid placement in charts.
